Something to Know - 20 September

Yes, we are getting closer to the election.  As such, the road is getting very rough.   HCR points out where the shabby infrastructure of the Republican Party includes "insurgent outliers" who would never have had a chance in political standing in the old days.   Their party is rife with some pretty putrid souls, who have aligned themselves with authoritarian leadership.  The GOP guy running for Governor of North Carolina is where the focus is right now.   The favorable signs that the current White House administration has achieved some success on the reduction of drug problems, that the economy and the stock market show a robustness we have not seen in a long time, and the Republican lead in the polls is trending not in their favor, has caused GOP infighting and stress.  With the House now having to deal with the Budget, what else is going to happen in the next few weeks?

We should know the difference between "stakeholder capitalism" and "shareholder capitalism".   One can be a corporation where its entirety is made up of the owners, the managers, and the employees.  The other is a corporation whose only concern is the people who own the stock.   To illustrate the differences between the two, Robert Reich has contributed this article for today:

A new perspective, for this forum, is the publication International Intrigue, which brings together an array of analysts who make opinions and commentary from an international perspective.  Briefly stated it is  "Your cheeky guide to a complicated world".   Let me know what you think of this trial run:

Introducing a powerhouse of a scholar and writer - Timothy Snyder.   This is mainly just knowing that he will be contributing now and then.   This article is something about his new book "On Freedom", and his visit with Volodymyr Zelenksky of Ukraine.
