Packing up stuff to leave this morning back to Claremont requires that I pass up the usual coffee and reading routine. So, I am just going to forward on an item from Matt Cartmill, his intro of what he is passing along; an article from David Brooks. Returning to a weekend of 110 degree heat in Claremont is going to be rough.

The attached op-ed piece by the moderate conservative columnist David Brooks from this morning's New York Times lays out a nightmare scenario for what strikes me as the most probable outcome of this year's election — namely, pitched battles
in the streets and the seizure of power by Trump and his militias. Brooks's picture is cogent and compelling. He is urging preparation for concerted post-election civic action and demonstrations by moderate Republicans and Democrats. It isn't clear why
he thinks that will do any good.
I am inclined to think that the only thing that can save American democracy is a Democratic landslide so overwhelming that Trump will not dare to claim victory on Election Night. Work for it, everybody.
