Things to Know - 18 August

1.  Democrats learn from past experience.  When John Kerry, a distinguished and honored Vietnam veteran, was swift-boated and trashed by a Super Pac, he was slow to respond, thinking he did not need to.  Well, it was not the wisest of moves on his part.  This time, there is actually a group who identify themselves as Special Opsec Education Fund, who are trashing Obama because in their mind he is taking too much credit for taking out Bin Laden.   In fact, they say that it was not Obama who took him out, it was the Navy Seals.   WTF?   We all saw the same announcement, and the follow up kudos - did we ever see or hear Obama say that he is the one who jumped out of the chopper, and ran through the hallways of the Al Queda compound to personally administer the fatal gun shot?   No.  Obama acted like a commander in chief should, and ordered the mission, and made the key decisions to complete a successful mission.   This time around, we are aware of "swift-boat" operations, and know better.  It's those other well-funded Rove-driven idiots who never learn:

2.  So, Romney thinks he is being forthright and magnanimous in saying that he never paid less than 13% in taxes.   Even if that is accurate, there are literally millions and millions of people are wondering what kind of tax rules are out there that the very wealthy people out there who pay much less than they do.  Mitt has a real problem on trying to put the lid on a can of worms:

3.  Robert Reich does not believe that Romney/Ryan is going to spark the big "debate" on real issues.   Personally, I thought it would, but I can see where Reich is coming from, you may too.  The underlying big issue that I THINK may be addressed (I stress the word MAY), is what is the purpose of the government, why or why not needed, and if we do need it what services do we want to have provided, and how much does each service cost, and what are we willing to pay for?   I really would like to see it all laid out.  There are just too many people running around half-crazed bitching about how bad the government is, and they have no idead what they are talking about, and continue to vote against their interests.   People want services, but are ignorant on how they are provided.  We need an education:

4.  The shameless excuse for a governor in Florida just got his agenda to prevent people from voting slapped down.   The blatantly craven and obviously unAmerican scheme to suppress citizens from voting by Republicans in charge of state legislatures is a dark blot on our history, and we have had a whole lot of dark blots.   It is obvious that the only way Republicans can win is to keep Democrats from voting.  There is nothing secretive about it - just in--your-face we won't let you vote!:

5.  Romney's persistent response to repeated questions about his releasing additional tax records was to say that "they will always want more, no matter what we give them, so I will not release any more than what I have done already".   To that end, and  to allay any fears that have been registered, the Obama team sent word to the Romney people that if "he were to release just a total of 5 years (2007-2011), Team Obama would not request any more tax information, at all, period.   Romney refused the offer - nope no more tax returns.   Folks, this is not going away, and Romney is going to have this hanging around his neck all the way into his sunset years:

6.  This is an excellent op-ed by Charles Blow.  The entire behavior, lack of transparency, the deceit, unethical conduct, association with the darkest side of sleaze, and lying - this is the way the Republican Ticket is trying to work its way to the White House.  It is the saddest commentary on what this country has come to from what it was:

7.  Following Charles Blow, Gail Collins follows the same theme, not quite as malevolent, but more like RomRyan coordinating their venture like the Keystone Cops.   If this is the best that the Republicans can do, the election hopefully winds up in a mandate - not just for Obama to complete what he started, but a mandate to clean up all the sludge and red grunge that has permeated a once-viable, but now totally corrupt and inept gathering of confused souls:

8.  Ryan brings his brand of Catholicism into the discussion.  It is his views and policy proposals that leave the disadvantaged, poor, and neglected high and dry with a very weak or absent safety net that has managed to incur the wrath of the Nuns and socially liberal Catholics. How this is all going to play out will be plotted by all the pollsters, I'm sure:
