Something to Know - 18 January

Ben Sargent
1.  It's official now.  The War is On.   I am making reference to the executive action and proposed legislation from the White House to attempt to control guns and violence in our society.   The NRA, and their like-minded special interest gun nuts are going ballistic now, and turning up the fear factor and rhetoric against any and all attempts to push back what they see as their exclusive domain.  It is going to be a contentious affair for the long-haul.  I will be posting stuff on this forum in the days ahead.  Here is one from the Daily Show:

2.  Here is a very interesting bit of history regarding the development of the 2nd Amendment, starting way back before the American Revolution.   One of the original intents was to arm slaveholders to prevent an uprising by the slaves.  What we have today is a result of the intentions that were instituted for other reasons, and which have been twisted to create a monster:

3.  For a change of pace, here is a call for Liberalism in this country to look at itself in a serious reflective manner and to "think outside the box" in ways to reform its mission that can adapt to the economic necessities of the times, and still maintain its goal to support and maintain a viable middle class.  We are not talking about guns here.  The subject is that times have changed, and what are we going to do about it?:

4.  It's been a while, so here's Thom Hartmann and his news stories.   The first one is about a groups of GOP legislators who want to impeach Obama for his actions on guns.   All I can say is that the Republicans are pushing this gun issue over to the social issues side that the GOP keeps losing - immigration, abortion, women's rights, etc.   They keep this up and they will marginalize themselves into big losses in the 2014 elections:

5.  This is the kind of stuff that I am talking about when the Republicans start talking about reforming themselves with respect to the voters in issues pointed out in #4 above.  They really don't have a clue on how to put it together:

6.  While the Republicans stumble around in disarray, the Democrats have it together and do things like the following article relates:
