An unending hammering away by the pin-headed right to demonize the term "socialism" is very short-sighted, and a cornerstone of Libertarian/Conservative philosophy. So, let's really take a look at the advantages of a society that pools its economic resources into programs that are intended for the benefit of all. The mantra of living your life by your own bootstraps sounds idealistic and opportunistic for all of us, but the only way to see it more clearly for what it is (I got mine, you go get your own), is to imagine what our way of life would be without the following. Indeed, there are those who live at the top of the economic pile, behind gated communities, with investments couched in off-shore places to avoid taxes, who really couldn't care less about those less fortunate. Here is a partial list for your consideration. Thanks to the guy with the yellow shorts up in the northwest who provided this reminder:

Q. What's the difference between a Hippo and a Zippo?
A. A Hippo is really heavy, and a Zippo is a little lighter.
